Bihar Panchami 2026: Banke Bihari's Appearance Day, and How to Celebrate at Home

Bihar Panchami is the appearance day of Shri Banke Bihari, the Krishna of Vrindavan's Banke Bihari temple, kept every year on Margashirsha Shukla Panchami, the fifth day of the bright half of Margashirsha. In 2026 it falls on Monday, 14 December, the date on the temple's own festival calendar. It is the same tithi as Vivah Panchami, the wedding day of Ram and Sita, so the two are kept on the same day. Below are the 2026 timings, the story of how Bihariji appeared to Swami Haridas in Nidhivan, how Vrindavan celebrates the day, and a simple way to celebrate it at home.

When is Bihar Panchami in 2026?

Bihar Panchami 2026 Monday, 14 December
Tithi Margashirsha Shukla Panchami
Panchami begins 4:47 pm, Sunday 13 December
Panchami ends 7:15 pm, Monday 14 December
Also that day Vivah Panchami

The panchami begins on Sunday afternoon, but a festival is kept on the day whose sunrise falls inside the tithi, and that is Monday. The same rule caused last year's confusion. In 2025 social media posts asked whether to keep Bihar Panchami on 25 or 26 November. The panchami ran from 9:22 pm on 24 November to 10:56 pm on 25 November, so the only sunrise inside it was on the 25th, and that was the day.

The date is from the Shri Banke Bihari Mandir festival calendar. Tithi times are from Drik Panchang for New Delhi, and shift by a few minutes with your city.

Is Bihar Panchami the same day as Vivah Panchami?

Yes. Both fall on Margashirsha Shukla Panchami, and in 2026 both are on 14 December. They mark two different events.

  • Vivah Panchami is the anniversary of the wedding of Ram and Sita in Janakpur. It is kept widely, and above all in Ayodhya and in Janakpur in Nepal.
  • Bihar Panchami is the day Banke Bihari appeared in Nidhivan, Vrindavan. It is kept by the Banke Bihari temple, by Nidhivan, and by devotees of Bihariji everywhere.

Many more people search for Vivah Panchami, so a calendar or app may show only that name for the day. If you celebrate Bihariji's day, it is the same date.

What happened on the first Bihar Panchami?

The temple tells it this way. Swami Haridas, a saint and singer whom the tradition regards as Lalita sakhi, Radha's closest companion, spent his days in a dense grove in Nidhivan, singing to Radha and Krishna. His disciples wanted to know what was special about the place. His nephew and chief disciple, Vithal Vipul Dev, asked on their behalf, and Swami Haridas told them to keep to their sadhana and wait.

On Vithal Vipul's birthday, Swami Haridas sent them into the grove. They came out half blinded, saying the dark kunj was full of light. He went in with them and prayed, and the divine couple appeared, smiling, so beautiful that no one could look away. Swami Haridas sang on the spot. His song begins:

Mai ri sahaj jori pragat bhai ju rang ki gaur syam ghan damini jaisen

The temple renders it as: look, the eternal couple has appeared, fair and dark like lightning in a rain cloud. The couple then left an image of themselves, in one form, for those who would come later. That image is Bihariji, revered in the temple as a living deity.

Devotees still sing this song on the day. Vrindavan Today's report of the 2021 festival opens with the crowd singing it.

How is Bihar Panchami celebrated in Vrindavan?

The day begins at Nidhivan, not at the temple, and moves to the temple by noon.

  1. Abhishek at the place of appearance. Early in the morning, at the Prakatya Sthal in Nidhivan, the symbolic footprints of Bihariji are bathed in public view with milk, curd, honey, ghee and water. In 2021 this began at 5 am. The place is then dressed with cloth, flowers and jewellery, and the panchamrit from the bath is given out as prasad.
  2. The procession. Later in the morning a procession leaves Nidhivan with bands, kirtan groups and flags. Three decorated chariots lead it, carrying images of Swami Haridas, Vithal Vipul Dev and Goswami Jagannath, the younger brother and disciple of Swami Haridas whose descendants, the Goswamis, still serve in the temple. The idea is that Swami Haridas and his disciples are going to greet Bihariji on his day.
  3. Rajbhog at noon. The procession winds through Vrindavan's main bazaars to reach the temple by Rajbhog, at 12 noon. The saints' images are taken inside and Rajbhog is offered. Devotees believe that on this one day Bihariji sits in Swami Haridas's lap and eats from his hands. Prasad is given out after the Rajbhog aarti.

The temple's Goswamis told Vrindavan Today that on Bihar Panchami Bihariji is dressed in yellow with gold ornaments, and offered fragrant flowers, dry fruit, kheer and a 56-dish bhog.

One correction. A widely read English guide says the temple holds a special mangala aarti on this day. The temple's festival calendar says mangala aarti is performed at Banke Bihari only once a year, on Krishna Janmashtami. If you are travelling, plan around the Nidhivan abhishek and the noon Rajbhog instead, and check the temple's Bihar Panchami page for the year's arrangements before you go.

How to Celebrate Bihar Panchami at Home?

The temple's pages describe the celebration in Vrindavan rather than a ritual for the home, so what follows is our suggestion: a simple way to follow the shape of Vrindavan's day from wherever you are. All you need is a picture or murti of Krishna, and a morning.

  1. Dress the altar in yellow. Bathe early, clean the altar, and lay a yellow cloth, the colour Bihariji wears on the day. Add fresh flowers if you have them.
  2. Offer panchamrit. Mix a little milk, curd, honey, ghee and water, the same five used at Nidhivan. Pour it gently over the feet of a small metal murti, or offer it in a bowl before a picture. Afterwards it is prasad for the family.
  3. Cook one sweet. Kheer is among the temple's offerings, and makhan mishri is always welcome to Krishna. Place a tulsi leaf on what you offer, as Vrindavan's Krishna temples do with every bhog.
  4. Offer it at noon. Keep your bhog for midday, the hour the procession reaches the temple and Rajbhog is offered, then do a short aarti.
  5. Sing and chant. Sing a Banke Bihari bhajan, or the line of Swami Haridas above, and sit for a round of Krishna's names on your tulsi japa mala. Remembering Swami Haridas is as much a part of the day as remembering Bihariji.
  6. Share the prasad. Give the panchamrit and the sweet to everyone at home, and to a neighbour if you can.

Some devotees also wear a tilak of Vrindavan Raj, the soil of Braj, to keep Vrindavan close on its own festival. Our guide to what Braj Raj is and how it is used explains why the soil is honoured, and our daily puja guide covers setting up the altar itself.

Is Bihar Panchami connected to the state of Bihar?

No. The name comes from Bihariji, Banke Bihari of Vrindavan, and the day is also called Bihari Panchami. It is a Vrindavan festival.

Who was Swami Haridas?

A saint and singer of Vrindavan, regarded in his tradition as Lalita sakhi, Radha's closest companion. He worshipped Radha and Krishna through song in Nidhivan, and Banke Bihari appeared there in answer to his devotion. His younger brother Goswami Jagannath was given the deity's daily seva, and the temple's Goswamis descend from him.

Is there a mangala aarti at Banke Bihari on Bihar Panchami?

The temple's festival calendar says mangala aarti is performed only on Krishna Janmashtami. The main events of Bihar Panchami are the early abhishek at Nidhivan and the procession that reaches the temple for Rajbhog at noon.

What is offered to Banke Bihari on Bihar Panchami?

The temple's Goswamis have said Bihariji is dressed in yellow with gold ornaments and offered fragrant flowers, dry fruit, kheer and a 56-dish bhog. At Nidhivan, his footprints are bathed with milk, curd, honey, ghee and water, and that panchamrit is given as prasad.

How can I celebrate Bihar Panchami at home?

Follow the shape of Vrindavan's day: dress the altar in yellow, offer panchamrit in the morning, offer a sweet such as kheer at noon, the hour of Rajbhog at the temple, then sing and chant and share the prasad. This is a suggestion that follows the temple's celebration, not a ritual the temple prescribes for the home.
